There is an old saying that music calms the savage beast and in reality, all of us have a beast inside of us that needs some taming. The beast that I’m talking about is stress and unfortunately, some of us have so much of this stress buildup in us that it can really hinder the way that we live our lives. Not only can it cause us difficulty in overcoming seemingly insurmountable objects, it can also cause physical problems and can even push us to the brink of death. That is why it is important for you to reduce your stress in any way possible.
One of the ways that you can reduce your stress to a certain extent is by the music that you listen to. There are several different types of music which have properties which naturally reduce our stress, but we may find that they are not necessarily to our liking. For example, classical music is an excellent tool to use whenever you are stressed out. There are many people, however, who do not enjoy classical music and this can seem like an insurmountable object. The reality of it is, however, you do not need to listen to audible music in order for it to have a good effect on your nerves. Have classical music playing in the background, almost to the point where it is indistinguishable from other background noise. It will make a difference in your stress levels.
Another thing that you can do is to avoid the types of music which may cause additional stress in your life. Hard-driving rock ‘n roll music or other type of music similar to this may actually cause adrenaline to surge in her body and can raise our stress levels considerably. This can be a difficult thing to do for many individuals that enjoy listening to this type of music. One of the best things that you can do in this case is to reduce the time that you are listening to this music to times whenever you are exercising or when your stress levels don’t really matter.
One final type of music that you might enjoy listening to is the relaxation music that typically goes along with nature sounds. There are plenty of CDs out there which contain this type of music and it can really help to calm and soothe your nerves while you’re in stressful situations. Give it a try for yourself, you would be surprised with how quickly it will work.
Life can certainly throw a lot of curves at us, and it is not difficult for us to be in a situation where we may be having a hard time facing all of the stress that is coming at us at one time. We may do a number of different things that can help us to de-stress to a certain extent, such as taking a vacation or perhaps sitting in a quiet room from time to time but these are not always going to be things that we are able to do. If the stress of life is getting to you, there may be some help in aromatherapy.
When most people think about aromatherapy, they may think about sitting in a quiet room full of candles or perhaps burning incense. Although these certainly are some of the ways that you can enjoy aromatherapy, you actually don’t need to be in a position of solitude in order to get the benefits from it. As a matter of fact, there are many products that allow you to take the aromatherapy with you, anywhere that you go. These natural scents will help you to deal with the stress in your life and to carry you away from it, to a certain extent.
Something that you want to be cautious about whenever using aromatherapy in this way is that the aromatherapy products that you are using are all natural. A good example of this are some of the candles that are burned in order to enjoy the scent. Although these candles may smell good, the reality of it is that they are not actually good for you. The same is also true with many of the aromatherapy products that are on the market. They use man-made chemicals that mimic the smell, but they hurt your health to a certain extent.
If you’re able to find a natural product, and there are plenty of them out there, you will soon find that you are able to overcome a lot of the stress that you are dealing with. It would also help if you were able to handle the stress by changing your thinking to a certain extent, and the stress relief that aromatherapy can provide will help to push you in that direction. Always remember, there are some things that you can change and there are some things that you can’t. By working on the ones that you can, you will help to de-stress yourself considerably.
Relaxation has a dual purpose in controlling stuttering. It works on both the body and the mind at the same time. You may not have thought of this before, you may not be aware of the positive effects relaxation can have on you.
First, relaxation affects every part of your body–your entire system. This includes all of the muscles that are used when you speak. From the muscles in your throat to that amazing diaphragm, the more relaxed your body is, the easier the words will flow. Relaxed muscles mean smoother speech; and smoother speech means less chance of stuttering.
Second, relaxation affects the mind. Even if you already know this, you may not have thought of how it is connected to your speech. The mind that is relaxed is better focused and more controlled. It is less bothered by small annoyances which create nervousness, tension, and self-consciousness. In turn, when the mind is relaxed and at ease, you are less likely to experience severe stuttering.
How do you learn to relax, so that you can reap these benefits? It is not difficult, even if you have a busy pace or lifestyle. You can begin with slow, deep breathing. Picture yourself in a nice, calm atmosphere, where everything is serene and tranquil. Allow yourself the luxury of dwelling in these kinds of thoughts periodically, throughout your day.
After you have learned how to do this, you can take your new practice with you when you need to communicate with other people. Before you begin to speak, visualize your calm atmosphere. Allow the comforting relaxation to fill your mind, and to fill your body. Not only will you feel more at ease, even in business or social situations, you actually will be more at ease. Your mind and body will savor the effects of relaxation, and will help you to control your stutter.
Stress is a fact of life, but being stressed out is not. We don’t always have control over what happens to us, says Allen Elkin, Ph.D., director of the Stress Management Counseling Center in New York City, and yet, that doesn’t mean we have to react to a difficult, challenging situation by becoming frazzled or feeling overwhelmed or distraught. Being overly anxious is not just a mental hazard; it’s a physical one too. The more stressed out we are the more vulnerable we are to colds, flu, and a host of chronic or life-threatening illnesses. And the less open we are to the beauty and pleasure of life.

Insomnia can be distressing. When you can’t sleep it affects everything you do and means that you are not in the best place to deal with life or enjoy it. If you’re having trouble sleeping, then tossing and turning with worry about it can make it even worse. There are things that you can do to help you to sleep. Try these relaxation techniques and tips for a good night’s sleep and start to wake up feeling rested and refreshed in the mornings.
When you can’t sleep it is often because you can’t relax or switch off. Many people suffer from stress symptoms and this eats into their nightly rest as well. In order to sleep you need to find ways to relax before you go to bed so that you can enjoy that warm, comfortable feeling that precedes a good night’s sleep.
Firstly, you probably have some idea of how much sleep you need to feel good. Make sure that you are aiming to get enough but not too much. Too much sleep can make you feel as groggy and grumpy as too little. It also helps to have a set routine as your body clock will adjust better if you go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning. Make sure that your bed is warm and comfortable and your room is quiet and dark. It might be time to invest in a new mattress, an electric blanket or hot water bottle, or a thicker pair of curtains.
Before you go to bed watch what you eat and drink. A large meal can play heavy on the digestive system and stop you getting off to sleep. On the other hand, when your stomach is grumbling with hunger, you may also have trouble sleeping. You may find a light snack an hour or so before bed is helpful.
Avoid stimulants and depressants such as caffeine and alcohol. Keep caffeine for the mornings – the later you drink it, the more problems you will have sleeping. This means avoiding coffee, cola and energy drinks/pills. You may think that alcohol makes you sleep better but you will not get a good quality sleep. Instead, try a relaxing mug of cocoa or a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime to help you unwind and sleep better.
Stimulants don’t just come in the form of drinks – spending too much time on a computer or watching television or even a chat with a friend can all keep your mind buzzing into the night and prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Avoid these activities for at least an hour before you go to bed. Try reading a book instead which is almost guaranteed to get your eyelids drooping, or relax yourself by taking a long, hot soak in the bath with some relaxing scented bubbles before you go to bed.
You could also have a go at meditation in the evenings or try drifting off to sleep whilst listening to some relaxing music or a self-hypnosis audio track. Many of these are specifically designed to help you relax or sleep. If you don’t fancy this, you could always try counting sheep or simply focusing on your breath and counting as you breathe in and out deeply. Muscle relaxation techniques can also be very effective – you work your way up or down the body, tensing each part and then releasing to relax the muscles. Don’t give up if it doesn’t work the first time around. Simply have another go.
If you are waking up tired in the mornings, you may be tempted to take a nap during the day. Resist the urge as this will mean that, once again, you don’t sleep effectively at night. Instead try a meditation or some relaxation techniques or physical exercise.
If you are finding it hard to relax generally and this is affecting your sleep, then perhaps you need to find ways to relieve your stress and anxiety. Try to deal with your problems rather than ignoring them and letting them get on top of you. There are many effective ways that you can deal with stress. If you are over-anxious, you will not sleep.
Finally, do not let your worry about your lack of sleep make things even worse. If you’ve used all these tips and just cannot sleep, then just try to relax your body and enjoy the comfortable time in your bed. Eventually your body will have to catch up on sleep of its own accord so relish the warmth and comfort and try not to make yourself more anxious. If you keep putting these relaxation techniques and tips into practice over a period of time, you should start to feel more relaxed and notice an improvement in your sleep patterns.
Did you know that you can use aromatherapy as part of your coping strategies for stress? Whilst some are sceptical about the power of alternative therapies to help and heal, aromatherapy has been shown in studies to help fight stress. Read on to find out how you can use aromatherapy to calm and relieve your stress and its symptoms.
Aromatherapy is a method of using scents or aromas, generally produced from plant essential oils, to create balance and healing in the body and mind. Think for a moment about the power of smell. Have you ever been overtaken by a scent that took you straight back to a past memory or reminded you of a person who is long since out of your life? Our sense of smell is very powerful and can produce impressive effects in the body and mind.
Aromatherapy works by stimulating our sense of smell, through the olfactory nerves in our nose. This affects our limbic system which is the part of the brain which regulates our moods, emotions and behaviour. This part of our brain also exerts control over our hormones and stress levels. It is thought to have evolved to manage our fight or flight response, an essential part of our reaction to stress.
It is therefore not surprising that scents can have a powerful effect on state of mind and emotions and, therefore, that certain essential oils should be effective in treating certain states of mind, such as stress. The main method of aromatherapy treatment is by inhalation which invokes the response in the brain specified above. And if our mind is responsible for producing the symptoms of stress in the body, then improving our state of mind can only help our stress symptoms. Studies have shown inhalation of essential oils to reduce blood pressure, pulse rate, subjective stress, anxiety and cortisol levels (the “stress hormone”).[1][2]
Research has shown that our brainwaves are affected by aromatherapy. The frequency of our brainwaves corresponds to our state of activity or relaxation. For example, a brain actively engaged in mental activities would be generating beta brainwaves, whereas alpha brainwaves would indicate a more relaxed state of mind. John Steele and Robert Tisserand showed that when calming oils are inhaled, they alter our brainwaves to a pattern of calmness[3]. Lavender has been found to produce the effect of alpha brainwaves. To relieve stress we would want to relax and it is no coincidence that Lavender is one of the most cited essential oils for stress relief.
Another method of applying aromatherapy is through topical application, directly onto the skin. The oils are absorbed into the body through the skin and there is evidence that the chemical compounds contained within have antibacterial and antioxidant properties and a beneficial effect on various tissues.
So, how can we best use aromatherapy to reduce our stress levels? Well, anything that is scented with an aroma that is known to help relax the mind should be able to help, although to a degree, the scents that relax us can be subjective. However, some of the fragrances which are most soothing for stress relief are lavender, camomile, sandalwood and ylang-ylang.
Adding aromatherapy oils to our bath can increase the relaxation benefits that we gain due to inhalation of the oils. Oils can also be inhaled via oil burners, on a tissue or using incense. You can also find candles, room fragrances and pillow sprays especially sold as stress relief products. And there are even scented “stress relief wraps” to apply, hot or cold, as compresses to stressed, tired muscles and joints.
Another fantastic way of relieving stress with aromatherapy is using massage. Professional massages will generally involve the use of aromatherapy oils, tailored to any symptoms from which you are suffering. You can also “do it yourself”. There are ready mixed stress relief massage oils available or you can mix your own by following a formula which you find in a book or on the internet.
So, now that you know that aromatherapy has been shown to relieve symptoms of stress and help sufferers, why not try it in your own campaign to fight stress. Make it a part of your regular stress coping strategies and see how much it can help you.

What would you consider to be the opposite of stress? For many of us we might consider that it is a peaceful situation or perhaps some kind of relaxing position that we may find ourselves in. That is why we often need to find some form of relaxation in order to help us to overcome the stress that we may be feeling. I know that sounds rather simplistic, but you would be surprised with how much a few minutes of relaxation can help you to overcome stressful situations that may seem insurmountable.
Let’s face it, all of us tend to be busy people and we may not have the opportunity to get away from it all and to relax on a regular basis. Fortunately, that is not always necessary in order for us to be able to deal with the stress that we are feeling. I like to start my day by getting up a little bit earlier and spending a half hour relaxing and mentally putting myself in a place where I feel peaceful. For me, it is thinking about some kind of vacation or relaxing environment where I am at my most comfortable. This is an excellent way for you to start the day and can really help you to be ready for whatever it may throw at you.
There may also be times during the day whenever you find yourself in a situation that is extremely stressful. Many of us feel the stress and instantly jump into the middle of the situation, trying to sort it out from all directions. Unfortunately, this only tends to raise our stress levels considerably and although the situation may be gone, our stress is still at its height. It is a much better idea for you to take just a few seconds, take a deep breath and relax before you take on the situation like this. You still will get it done in the same amount of time, but your stress levels will not stick with you for the rest of the day.
It is also a good idea for you to get up and stretch every once in a while whenever you tend to be sitting for long periods of time. This can be an excellent way for you to relax, and not only will it help you mentally, it will also help you physically as well. By overcoming some of the tension that we may be feeling, our stress levels will drop right along with it.
