You can achieve a deep degree of relaxation in your mind and body by using the following stepwise technique. You can use the technique as a daily routine at a specific time each day or any time you feel stressed and need to relax. It is also fine to use just after going to bed to be able to fall in sleep more easily.
Lay down on your back or in any other position you feel comfortable so that you do not need to use muscular work to support your position. Also have some clothes on you or a carpet over you so that you do not feel cold.
Initially just relax your whole body as well as you can. Also try to stop thinking actively about anything except the relaxation.
Then breath deeply in and then let the air out of your lungs again by relaxing all your respiratory muscles. Repeat this deep breathing in a minute or more until you feel that you are breathing this way automatically.
Then concentrate on your pelvic area and lover stomach and relax all your muscles in that area as well as you can. When you feel relaxed in your pelvic zone, turn your attention downwards to your legs and relax both your legs as well as possible. Make sure you feel relaxed all the way down to your toes.
Then concentrate on the mid area of your back and your upper stomach and relax all the muscles in this area. When you feel your mid area has got relaxed, turn your attention downwards along your spine and further down your stomach and let all the tension in these areas go.
Then concentrate on your neck and shoulders and relax all your muscles here. When you feel the tension slip in this zone, concentrate on your upper spine area and you chest and slip the tension in your muscles here. Also concentrate on your arms and relax your arms as completely as possible all the way to your finger tips
Then turn your attention to your head and face and relax all the muscles in your head. Be especially sure you relax the muscles around your eyes and your jaw muscles.
Then make sure you still are breathing deeply and with a total relaxation of your breathing muscles when you exhale.
Try to relax your whole body even more. As a last step also empty your mind for all thoughts.
Then lay in this completely relaxed state some while.
