Stress

Too much stress can adversely affect your health so knowing your own limit is very important. But how much stress is too much? It varies considerably for each person. Just as people have different pain or alcohol tolerance, so too when it comes to the level of stress they can tolerate. What may be “too much” for one person may still be tolerable for another person. Some people who are used to a stressful environment or job can tolerate much stress. While others who are not used to a high-stress lifestyle will feel stressed-out at the slightest frustration, obstacle, or pressure.

Your stress tolerance depends on many factors. For instance, your attitude and outlook in life affects how you are able to handle stress. People who are optimistic have higher stress tolerance. They are likely to have a good sense of humor, embrace challenges, believe that there is a purpose for things, and accept change as a part of life. Your sense of control also determines how well you can take stress. Confident people and those who are able to persevere through challenges find it easier to face daily stressors in a stride. On the other hand, people who often feel like things are out of control are more vulnerable to stress. How you deal with your emotions also affects your stress tolerance. If you are the type who have difficulty to be calm and unable to soothe yourself whenever you feel angry or feel other negative emotions, then you’re extremely vulnerable to stress. Having a strong support network is also a very important when it comes to stress tolerance. People who are lonely and tend to isolate themselves have greater vulnerability to stress because they have no buffer against stressors. Finally, your knowledge about stress and stress management makes you more prepared in facing your daily stressors. If you know what to expect about a stressful situation, you are more likely able to cope with it.
